Descriptive writing

Read Steadfast's piece of descriptive writing.  The task was to choose an image and describe it using the best descriptive vocabulary they could.  I think this writing is amazing!  What do you think?

Congratulations Tui!

A big congratulations and well done to Tui for passing the subtraction level in xtramath this week.  It's a difficult challenge to get 100 questions right so quickly!

Kidsedchatnz - Passions, talents, life long learners

The twitter chat this week was about our passions, interests, and learning.  Before we looked at the questions we watched these two clips:

They were really interesting clips!

Here are the questions that we had, and the answers that we gave.

Kidsedchatnz twitter chat

Wednesday afternoons are Room 8's "tech" time. We work in groups on different technology challenges. Two of the groups participate in the weekly @Kidsedchatnz twitter chat. This week the topic was "10 Random Questions". The questions were very thought-provoking. First we watched a clip (at the bottom of the post), then we answered as many questions as we could. Have a read of our responses. What would you have written?

Room 8 has been busy this year!

As part of our classroom displays for Art, Craft & Market Day, Miss Bolton has made a slideshow of what we have been doing this year (so far). Enjoy the show!

Tapa Art

Room 8 has begun to look at the art of Tapa cloth.  We have learned that tapa has different names depending on which Pacific nation you are from:

   Cook Islands/Tahiti - Tapa
   Samoa - Siapo
   Niue - Hiapo
   Tonga - Ngatu
   Fiji - Masi
   Hawai'i - Kapa

First we talked about what we already knew about tapa.  Then we looked at images of tapa cloths and wrote down what we noticed and what we wondered.  Click here to see what we noticed and wondered.

We also watched this clip about tapa from the programme "Tangata Pasifika"

We will be designing and creating our own digital tapa cloths.

Keep checking back to see photos of our work!

Algebra

This week's maths focus has been Algebra, in particular finding rules for sequential patterns.  It has been quite challenging, but there have been a lot of great discussions happening around the class.

Here are a few shots of the what our board has been looking like at the end of our maths session:

Today (20 August)

Yesterday (19 August)

Here are some clips of our discussions and work:

AVAILLL

Room 8 has begun a new reading programme called AVAILLL.  It stands for Audio Visual Achievement In Literacy, Language, and Learning.

We "ReadWatch" a movie.  This means that while the movie is playing, we have to also read the subtitles.  Throughout the movie there are activities we have to complete, and we also read parts of the book that the movie is based on.  We have to pay a lot of attention to the subtitles to complete the activities correctly!

The first movie we have studied is "Meet the Robinsons", which is based on the book "A Day with Wilbur Robinson".

Below are a few photos and videos of Room 8 during our AVAILLL time.

ReadWatching "Meet the Robinsons".  You can see that everyone is on task, and if you watch carefully you can see people reading the subtitles!

This activity is called Spellfast.  You can see (and hear!) that every one is on task and engaged in the activity.

The Week that was - term 3 week 3

Year 5 & 6 Netball

Last Thursday we sent two teams to the Franklin Year 5 & 6 Netball tournament.  Luckily the weather was brilliant and sunny!  Miss Bolton and Mr Thompson went with the teams and umpired the games.  Mrs Shea helped with transport.

Both teams played very well, and had some tough games.  The girls team came second in their pool and the boys team came fourth.

Writing Challenge

Today Miss Bolton challenged Room 8 to write a story in 15 minutes.  Each person chose a setting from a list on the board, then had 15 minutes to write.  Every one took this challenge very seriously, nothing could be heard apart from fingers tapping on keyboards.

After the time was up, we all shared our writing with another person and we had to make a comment on their writing.  Then we had time to share our writing with the class.

Room 8 were so involved with our writing that they convinced Miss Bolton to let them carry on writing!

Here are the links to our writing:

Apology from Miss Bolton

Hi Room 8,

I have to apologise as I accidentally deleted some of our comments from the blog :(

The layout/settings of page where I go to publish the comments has changed, and I thought I was deleting comments that had been doubled up. They weren't :'(

Our Quadblogging partners from Hay Park School left some really awesome comments - very well thought out and written. Unfortunately they are gone.

I have sent some feedback to the Blogger people about this issue, and have asked why they changed it.

**Update = I've found a way to recover the Haypark School comments.  I will get them uploaded by tomorrow.**

Great effort Kaleb!

Well done Kaleb, you have passed the multiplication section of xtramath!

Well done Brier, you are the first Room 8 student to achieve a black belt in any of the Google Apps.   I know if I have any questions about using Google Slides, I'll definitely be coming to see you!

Thank you for already sharing your knowledge and helping out the other students in our class.

Harold's here!

Room 8 was very excited to see the Life Education mobile classroom pull up this afternoon.

Next week every class will have sessions in the classroom with Sally and Harold.

I wonder what we will learn about this year...

Week 5 reflections

Sorry I was a bit late getting our reflections up from last week. I like how many people in Room 8 are able to write two positive thoughts about the week and one thing they'd like to improve. Room 8 had an amazing week! Miss Bolton.

Learning about Asthma

Today Paerata School learned about asthma.  Chris and Sailor the Puffer Fish came to explain to us what asthma is and how we can help people who suffer from asthma.

Room 8 learned a lot, after the show we put together this slideshow.  We hope you learn something about asthma by watching our slideshow.

Bullying has to STOP

Take a long hard look at yourselve's people. Are you a bully ?.Are you the kind of person who likes to make people suffer. If you are, then why do you really make people feel horrible.Think about that question. It doesn't matter if it's a kid,a friend,a loved one or even your teachers and principal. It is NOT good.Kids all around are terryfied of bullies.Arguments lead to fights, fights lead to bullying and bullying leads to the ultimate consequence . . . suicidal thought and suicaidal thoughts lead to death, pain and blood . . .And if you had to bare with the fact that someone had killed or hurt themselves because you bullied them, your life would never be the same again. You can't bully if everyone you bully is dead. But you do have a chance to change. You can stop by saying these 5 simple words."I will never bully again".That can change everything.People won't beleive you at first, but you can show them you're different. You can change.think about it.

Growth mindset - The Power of Yet!

Room 8 has been learning about what a growth mindset is this week.  When Miss Bolton was away at her MST days, she learned a lot about what a growth mindset is, so she has decided to teach us about it too!

A growth mindset is all about how you think about learning - you might say "I don't know how to do that yet"  or you will give something a go and if you fail you will learn from your mistake and try
again.

If you say you can't do something, or you won't give it a go because you might fail - that is a fixed mindset.

Watch this clip - how does it relate to having a growth mindset?

Dawn Parade by Ana Davis

We wear poppys because these flowers grew

in the flanders fields.

Things, my mother told me about Great-grandad.

That he always wore a brown jumper.

That he  had tufts of hair like white furthers.

That he didnt like the word um.

Why do we wear the red poppy by Ofa

why we wear poppies-Brier

We wear a poppy because these flowers were growing in Flanders fields where soldiers fell in other words died.

In Flanders fields-Brier

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky.
The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow. Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields .

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To  you from failing hands we throw. The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders field.

Author Visit

On Friday 24 April, Paerata School had a visit from Allie Toledo, the author of the book "Wearing the poppy".

She told the seniors about World War 1, particularly about the battles at Gallipoli.  She also told us about how many New Zealand men went to war - and how many men did not come home.

Allie told us about her own family connection to the war and how she has done research to find out the stories of her uncle's time in the war.

Allie also showed us two books by another author.  These books were written to remember the soldiers from Samoa and Tonga who fought in World War 1.
Listening, writing notes.

ANZAC Art

This week Room 8 has been learning about what it means to be an ANZAC.  We have been doing a lot of reading and research about Gallipoli and World War 1.

While Miss Bolton was at her  MST conference, Mrs Pearce was teaching Room 8.  She showed Room 8 how to create some awesome art to commemorate ANZAC Day.

Room 8's writing

In writing this week, we have been working on making our writing more interesting to read.  We have been discussing WOW words - descriptive words that make our work more interesting.  Words like:
enormous instead of big    or      icy instead of cold.

Below are some videos of our work using the website telescopictext.org - we started with a very simple sentence, then added WOW words and extra detail to make the sentence more interesting.

What do you think of our work?

Maths - Place Value with decimals

Today for maths we were practising converting decimals to whole numbers, such as 3.502 million is the same as 3,502,000. This was quite challenging!

We had to order the populations for cities around the world. We wrote the population onto a post-it, then we ordered the populations from smallest to largest. As a class we checked the order. We had to change some because they were in the wrong order. Oops!

What did you learn from this activity?

Why do we celebrate Waitangi Day?

Room 8 has researched information about the Treaty of Waitangi.  It is an important document in our country's history, but what do we know about it?

The students in Room 8 were asked to research about the Treaty and present this information using Google Slideshow.

For some students this was the first time they had used Google Slideshow.  I think everyone did an amazing job, especially since they only had just over an hour to research and present their work!

Wow, it's another new year at Paerata School!

This year we have an awesome group of Year 5 and 6s in Room 8. We are going to use our class blog to showcase our fantastic learning.

To start the year, I would like all students in Room 8 to complete this Google Form about what they think about maths.

I am so looking forward to having a brilliant year in Room 8! Miss Bolton
