Tapa Art

Room 8 has begun to look at the art of Tapa cloth.  We have learned that tapa has different names depending on which Pacific nation you are from:

   Cook Islands/Tahiti - Tapa
   Samoa - Siapo
   Niue - Hiapo
   Tonga - Ngatu
   Fiji - Masi
   Hawai'i - Kapa

First we talked about what we already knew about tapa.  Then we looked at images of tapa cloths and wrote down what we noticed and what we wondered.  Click here to see what we noticed and wondered.

We also watched this clip about tapa from the programme "Tangata Pasifika"

We will be designing and creating our own digital tapa cloths.

Keep checking back to see photos of our work!

  1. Hi Room 8 at Paerata School- we are Room 8 from Miramar North School! Are you enjoying learning about and making your tapa cloths? We would love to make one of our own. We are looking forward to seeing how you will create your digital tapa! Some of us have drawn tapa designs before- we drew designs such as koru's, leaves, flowers etc. We painted it over with brown dye and then scrunched it up. It looked cool. We are looking forward to reading more about your learning process on your blog :)
