Planting Peas

Digging potting mix out of the bag.
Continuing our Gardening topic Room 8 have planted some pea seeds.  They could choose from either Sugarsnap peas or Snow peas.

First we filled our plastic cup with potting mix.  We are using plastic cups so that we can watch the seeds germinating.
Carefully planting the seeds.
Next we planted our seeds.  We put one seed down the side of the cup so we could see it.  We could spread the other seeds around the cup.
We had to make sure our seeds were covered with potting mix.

Potatoes

To plant the potatoes we had to fill our buckets with soil and compost - not right to the top but almost, and them put our sprouting potato in our bucket and cover it like it's in bed.  Then let it grow before you eat it.

Planting with Room 8

We are growing strawflowers.

First we put compost in the flower pots.  Then we got some potting mix.  Harmony helped put the potting mix into our flower pots.  Next we put the seeds in, they looked like tiny ants and sprinkles.  Some looked like 100s and 1000s.   We gave the seeds a little mix, so the seeds could go down into the soil.

The compost looked like soil.  It smelled like poo.  The compost has got pieces of bark in it.  It made our hands grubby.  The compost pile looked light on the top and dark in the middle.

The potting mix looked dark.  We had to wait for Harmony to help us get the potting mix.  The potting mix didn't smell.

Photos of the Junior gardens

Our new gardens

15 May

Yesterday the juniors went outside and we planted cabbage, broccoli, lettuce and cauliflower.  First we stirred the compost and soil around and the teachers picked some people to plant the vegetables in the tyres.  To plant the vegetables we had to dig a big hole and then we put in the plant and covered up the hole with soil and compost and press down the dirt so it wouldn't blow around.  Then some people sprinkled some worm juice over the top.

ICT tools

In Room 8 we are becoming much more confident using netbooks and iPads to investigate topics and questions.  These photos are showing us using netbooks, Apples, the iPad and iPhone to investigate what we need to start our worm farm.

The first post!

Welcome to Room 8's brand new blog!  I'm really excited to get this up and running.  Hopefully we can keep adding to this blog to show everyone the awesome learning we are doing.
